Both materials are much heavier than composition shingle, so the roof framing needs to be able to support the weight. If a tile roof is not a good fit for your home, stone coated steel is available in tile and shake profiles at a fraction of the weight.
Tile and slate can crack in a heavy hail storm. Individual tiles can usually be replaced as long as a matching tile is available.

How long does a slate or clay roof last?

What happens when hail breaks tiles?
Broken tiles can be replaced individually. It is a good idea to keep a few spare tiles in case a color or profile is discontinued.
Is there a lighter option with the same look?
Yes. Stone coated steel is made in tile and shake profiles and weighs much less than clay or slate. We install stone coated steel as well as slate and clay tile.
